Mazda Celebrates 1991 Le Mans Victory with Commemorative 787B and Dempsey

Endurance road racing is the ultimate demonstration of quality, durability, and reliability. It has been a pillar of Mazda's participation in motorsports since 1968. June 11, 2011, Mazda and thousands of fans, celebrated their 20th Le Mans victory anniversary.  Mazda was, and continues to be the only Japanese automaker to score an overall win at the world's most renowned endurance race, in 1991.

To celebrate this timeless achievement, which represents the fun-driving spirit of Mazda to this day, a dedicated team of Mazda Motor Corporation employees developed a 700-horsepower (hp), four-rotor Mazda 787B to race the track in lightning speed. Behind the wheel, was none other than the Patrick Dempsey, known across the globe among TV and movie fans, and in North American among Road Racing fans.

"This is a very special occasion for Mazda," says John Doonan, Mazda North American Operations. "This will bring together our most iconic prototype with our most recognizable racer. Over the past several years, we have come to know Patrick as someone who is deeply committed to the sport, and very knowledgeable about the heritage involved. We wouldn't allow just any racer to drive our masterpiece. Patrick earned this honor."1

Another guest driver, die-hard Mazda racing fans recognized was one of the three racers who originally drove the 787B to victory: the legendary Johnny Herbert ! Undoubtedly, a pretty spectacular sight - especially for the enthusiasts lucky enough to see the win in '91.
