2011 MAZDA2: Easy on the Eyes, Easy on the Wallet

The 2011 MAZDA2 offers a minimalist presence and maximum performance, and it brings new meaning to the phrase, "zoom-zoom". It's like driving a sports car without the sports car price tag.

Car and Driver named the MAZDA2 2011 Editor's Choice. Even more recently, Cars.com named the sporty compact the third least expensive new car to buy.

In determining the least expensive cars to buy, Cars.com first made a list of prerequisites: power windows, locks and mirrors, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, automatic transmission, and electronic stability control. That narrowed the number of contenders down to 13, ranging from the MAZDA2 to the Fiat 500.

To raise the stakes even higher Cars.com added fuel cost into the equation. So the total cost of the vehicle, included MSRP, the most expensive destination fee in the class, and for a year's worth of gasoline (15,000 miles of mixed highway and city driving at $3.96 per gallon). The MAZDA2's "Total Cost" listed on Cars.com's Affordability Index came in at a net $17,824...over a grand less than the Index average.
