To start with, SkyActiv technology gives the MAZDA3 a new high-compression engine and six-speed transmission (manual or automatic). The fuel economy jumps up to an EPA-estimated 40 mpg. That's 7-mpg more than last year's model!

And it hasn't lost any power, either. In fact, it gained 10-hp for a total of 155, and 12 extra lb.-ft of torque compared to the 2011 model. With all this under the hood, and a base-model MSRP of just over $15,000, it should be really easy to "never stop having fun."¹.

The outside of the MAZDA3 got a bit of a facelift, as well. The new front fascia received an updated grille, the outside edges of the bumper and fog lights were redesigned as well. It wasn't just for looks, though. Mazda redesigned the front end of the car to reduce the vehicle coefficient drag by seven percent. Not only does that bump the fuel economy of the MAZDA3, it means a quieter cabin.
