Mazda Closes 2011 Race Season with More Wins

You may know about the cutting edge design of the 2012 MAZDA3 or the 2012 MAZDA6, models that embody the brand's racing spirit. What you might also find interesting is how dedicated MAZDASPEED Motorsports is to helping their grassroots kart racers become professional drivers. It is largely because of this commitment Mazda continues to be the number-one brand for road-racers in North America and ends the 2011 racing season with more championships under their belt.

Together with Dempsey Racing, Dyson Racing, Freedom Autosport, i-Moto Racing, Racers Edge, SpeedSource and Team Sahlen, Mazda racers nabbed trophies for Manufacturers championships at both the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. And while the manufacturers championships was just three-tenths of a second out of reach for Mazda at the Rolex Grand-Am Championship, the Mazda RX-8 finished third, fourth and fifth in the team competitions.

How does this benefit Mazda drivers? Mazda rewards their winning drivers with the innovative MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Ladder. This program allows winning Mazda drivers to rise up through the ranks from grassroots kart races to high level race circuits with every win. Three of the four 2011 MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Ladder champions have been named so far this year, two of which are included in the Mazda Road to Indy.

It takes a wide range of people to create such a winning team. John Doonan, Director of Motorsports for Mazda North American Operations, reflects on the work it takes to become the best, "Championships actually take years to accomplish, as you need to develop both the people and the products. …This success was achieved through the same qualities as our street cars - great performance combined with quality, durability and reliability."1
